Broccoli Au Gratin

2 T. butter or margarine, melted

4 cups fresh or frozen (defrosted) broccoli

1/4 chopped onion

1 egg

1/3 cup heavy cream

1/4 cup chicken broth

1/4 tsp salt

freshly cracked black pepper to taste

1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg

1/2 cup bread crumbs

1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese


Brush interior bottom of clay pot with 1 tablespoon melted butter.  Add broccoli and onion.  Beat together egg and remaining ingredients (through nutmeg) and pour over broccoli and onion.     Cover baker with lid, set in cold oven.  Set oven temperature to 425F and bake until broccoli is tender and egg mixture is set, about  25­-30 minutes.   Combine remaining 1 tablespoon butter with bread crumbs and cheese.  Remove baker from oven, sprinkle bread crumb mixture evenly over broccoli.  Return baker to oven, uncovered, and continue baking until top browns, about 5­-10 minutes.  Serve immediately
