Awesome Apple Crisp

9 cups peeled & sliced baking apples (such as Granny Smith or Golden Delicious)

1 cup white sugar

1 Tbl. all­purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg

1/4 cup water *(optional­ see note below)  


1 cup packed brown sugar

1 cup all­purpose flour

1 cup old­fashioned oats

1/4 tsp. baking powder

1/4 tsp. baking soda

1/2 cup butter, cut into small pieces      


Generously grease clay baker bottom with butter or cooking spray.  Combine sliced apples, 1 T. flour, 1 cup white sugar, and spices.  Stir well to evenly coat apples. Place apple mixture in bottom of clay baker.  Pour 1/4 cup water evenly over apples (SEE NOTE BELOW)  

Topping:  Combine dry ingredients. Stir well.  Cut in butter with pastry blender or 2 knives until butter is about pea­size pieces. Spread topping evenly over apples.

Cover baker and put in cold oven, set oven temperature to 425 °F.  Bake 30 minutes.  Remove lid and continue baking about 20 minutes or until top is golden and bubbly.   Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.  

*NOTE: The 1/4 cup water creates a nice sauce as seen in the photo, however, if you prefer your apple crisp a bit thicker, do not add the water.
